Chhayanaut observed the death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam with a vibrant evening of music, dance and recitation. The special programme, titled “Dhaka Enraptured by Nazrul’s Songs,” was held at 7pm on Thursday at the Chhayanaut Auditorium in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

The program celebrated Nazrul’s creative genius, spirit of rebellion, progressive ideas and the vitality of youth through a rich selection of solo and ensemble performances, dance and recitation.

Addressing the audience, Chhayanaut General Secretary Laisa Ahmed Lisa spoke about Nazrul’s historic connection with Dhaka and its progressive cultural movement. She recalled how Nazrul Islam had welcomed the members of the Shikha group amid a call for the new generation.

“Hundred years ago, the young people of Dhaka, through their association, gave birth to new ideas and ideals of social liberation. The poet of youth, Kazi Nazrul Islam, stirred the hearts and minds of Dhaka’s people through songs and poetry in celebration of that spirit,” she said.

She added that Chhayanaut had organized the program to commemorate the centenary of that unique convergence of free thought and rebellious youth.

The musical performances began with Gargi Ghosh presenting the solo song “Asile Ke Go Atithi Uraye Nishan.” Chhayanaut artistes then performed the songs “Oth Re Chashi, Jagatbashi, Dhar Kase Langal” and “Durgam Giri Kantar Moru” through a combination of choral singing and dance.

The programme also featured a spirited ensemble rendition of “Chal Chal Chal,” one of Nazrul’s most inspiring songs, creating an atmosphere of energy and enthusiasm in the auditorium.

A number of artistes presented Nazrul’s songs in solo performances. Shaheen Samad performed “Eto Jol O-Kajal Chokhe,” while Bijon Chandra Mistry presented “Bagichay Bulbuli Tui.” Aishwarya Samaddar sang “Ami Ki Sukhe Lo,” and Rezaul Karim performed “Bosiya Nodi Kule.” Mirajul Jannat Sonia presented “Na Mitiye Sadh Mor.”

Nazrul’s songs were also performed in solo renditions by Afsana Runa, Suman Majumdar, Nasima Shaheen Fancy, Sharmin Sathi Islam and Sanjida Bithika.

The program also highlighted Nazrul’s powerful poetic voice. Mahmuda Akhter and Dewan Saidul Hasan jointly recited excerpts from the poet’s celebrated poem “Khaled.”

Through music, dance and recitation, the evening at Chhayanaut brought alive the cultural spirit of Dhaka a century ago. More than a commemoration of Nazrul’s passing, the program became a celebration of his enduring legacy—his advocacy of equality, humanity, free thought and the indomitable spirit of youth.

Nazrul’s words and melodies continue to resonate across generations, and the evening’s performances reaffirmed the timeless relevance of his rebellious and humanistic vision.
