On the occasion of the 126th birth anniversary of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, an evocative evening of music titled “Thumri Jalsa” was held yesterday, May 24, at the Chhayanaut Cultural Centre auditorium in Dhaka. The program transformed into an emotional gathering of artists and audience members alike, where melodies became the medium to rediscover the timeless essence of the Rebel Poet.
Organized by the Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Sangstha (BNSS) and supported by Enigma TV, the event began at 6:30 PM. For those unable to attend in person, Enigma TV arranged a live broadcast, allowing Nazrul admirers from across the country to experience the musical evening in real time.
Renowned Nazrul Sangeet artists from across the country performed during the event. Their renditions of Nazrul’s Thumri-influenced and raga-based compositions echoed themes of love, sorrow, spirituality, and the rich complexity of classical emotion. In addition, some traditional Thumri pieces were also presented, adding diversity and depth to the evening.
‘Thumri Jalsa’ was more than just a musical performance—it was a heartfelt tribute, a spiritual journey through melody in remembrance of the National Poet. This celebration of Nazrul’s legacy stood as a reflection of pure love and gratitude towards his artistic contribution.
Audience members noted that the event was not merely an evening of music, but rather a soulful conversation with Nazrul’s musical spirit—an experience that will linger long in their memories.
